Basic tax deadline prolonged in Nassau County, North Hempstead

Press release from the city of North Hempstead:

January 31, 2021

North Hempstead City Overseer Judi Bosworth and Tax Recipient Charles Berman are reminding residents that the last day to pay General Taxes 2021 – first half bill without penalty – is now Friday, March 12, 2021. The first half of general tax payments for 2021 must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before March 12, 2021 to avoid a penalty. New York State Governor Cuomo signed an executive order that extended the payment of general taxes.

Online tax payment information is shown on the back of your invoice. Online payments can be made by e-check or credit card at www.northhempsteadny.gov/tax-payments. The normal processing fees for online check payments have changed. The city is offering a temporary nominal processing fee of $ 0.01 for online e-check tax payments by the Automated Clearing House (ACH) during this period of social distancing to facilitate the housing of residents.

The tax office’s exemption from fees applies specifically to ACH E-Check payments, where funds are debited directly from a person’s checking account.

The processing fee for online credit card payments is still 2.35% of the tax amount per transaction. Under New York General Municipal Law, individuals who pay their property taxes by credit card must also pay the fees associated with the payment process. The city does not receive any part of the service fee – this fee is withheld by payment processing providers. Accepted credit cards are American Express, Mastercard, Discover or Visa.

In order to meet social distancing requirements, in-person payments and cash payments are not accepted. Community collection points have been removed for this period and the main office at 200 Plandome Road in Manhasset will be closed to the general public. Payments can be made online via the recipient’s online payment portal, US Mail, or in person to a dropbox in the anteroom of the tax office (during normal business hours). Before making payments, please ensure that you have your check drawn up, provided your general tax invoice number and / or section block and lot, and placed your remittance stub in the sealed green envelope.

Anyone who makes payments by post should include the transfer stub with their check or money order in the green envelope. You will also be asked to write your invoice number (s) on the check (s), include the payment stub, and pay checks to: Charles Berman, Tax Recipient and Post to Tax Recipient at 200 Plandome Road, Manhasset, NY 11030.

If you are paying using your bank’s online invoice, please include the account number located in the top right corner of your tax invoice. Your payment goes directly to the recipient’s new e-lockbox.
