On July 14th, the European Commission published FAQs on the proposed revisions of the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD) in order to achieve climate neutrality. Topics covered include: 1) a new minimum tax rate for the environmental tax on energy products; 2) a new progressive excise tax scale for fuel consumption, which ranges from 0.15 euros (0.17 US dollars) per gigajoule to 10.75 euros (12.70 US dollars) per gigajoule; 3) the expansion of the EU energy tax framework to include more energy-related processes; 4) the abolition of the excise duty exemption for fuels used in the shipping and aviation industries; and 5) the streamlining of differentiated tariffs, exceptions and discounts on …
